KISS TAKES HIS FIRST POLE AT LAUSITZRING
A tight battle in the final qualifying session saw Norbert Kiss beat Jochen Hahn for Race 3 pole position.
Kiss had looked to have an advantage in the second qualifying of the weekend, topping Q1 and Q2 competitively. However, when it came to Q3, Hahn was ready to take the battle to the Hungarian and fight for the top spot.
They traded fastest sectors for the first two thirds of the track, the pair being split by thousandths of a second. It was sector three that Kiss dominated to comfortably secure his second pole position of the year.
Steffi Halm had a great final flying lap to secure third on the grid, ahead of Antonio Albacete and René Reinert. Sascha Lenz was the final qualifier of Q3. He tried to go out a little later than the rest of the grid to offset his lap time, but the gamble did not pay off in finding any additional lap time with track evolution.
Reinert almost found himself eliminated from Q2 after his fastest lap time was deleted due to a penalty marker infringement, but he improved to just secure himself a top six position, demoting Chrome pole sitter Mark Taylor out of the final session. This marks Taylor’s fourth pole position in class this season as he looks to extend his one-point lead on Bradley Smith in the Chrome standings.
Luis Recuenco splits the two competing Chrome drivers to take second in class, eighth overall, as he continues with his strong form this weekend. Apart from his one mistake in Race 1, spinning out and losing himself what should have been his first class podium of the weekend, Recuenco has had a very competitive outing at the Lausitzring.
Clemens Hecker and Luke Garrett completed the classified Q2 runners. Albeit setting a lap time fast enough for P10 in Q1, Steffen Faas was unable to join the track for Q2, meaning he will start P12 on the Race 3 grid.
John Newell was eliminated from Q1 after Clemens Hecker set his second flying lap. His first had been deleted due to a penalty marker violation but he had enough time and enough speed to get into the second qualifying session. Newell will be joined by Christian Ruppert on the seventh row of the grid.
It is still unclear whether José Eduardo Rodrigues will take to the grid for the third race of the weekend. He was unable to take part in qualifying due to a gearbox failure, which the team are replacing. So long as it can be complete before the start of Race 3, Rodrigues will be 15th on the grid.
